Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

  • 1 pound 90% lean ground beef

  • 8 ounces mushrooms, finely chopped or pulsed in a food processor

  • ½ cup diced onion

  • 1 15-ounce can no-salt-added tomato sauce

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

  • ¾ teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • 8 ounces whole-wheat rotini or fusilli

  • ½ cup shredded extra-sharp Cheddar cheese

  • ¼ cup chopped fresh basil for garnish

Directions

  1. Warm oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, mushrooms, and onion, cooking and stirring until the beef is fully browned and the mushroom liquid has mostly evaporated, about 8 to 10 minutes.

  2. Mix in the tomato sauce, water, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and garlic powder.

  3. Add the pasta and bring the mixture to a boil.

  4. Cover the skillet, lower the heat, and let it cook, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed, approximately 16 to 18 minutes.

  5. Sprinkle cheese over the pasta, cover, and continue cooking for another 2 to 3 minutes, until the cheese is fully melted.

  6. Garnish with fresh basil, if desired.
