Apple crumble
Grandma's Apple Crumble
My Grandma's crumble recipe is simple, requiring only apples, brown sugar, flour, and butter—nothing more. However, there are a few easy additions that can enhance its flavor, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
With just four ingredients, the quality of each is crucial. Choose the best apples you can find—Braeburn, Granny Smith, Pink Lady, Golden Delicious, and Honeycrisp are all excellent options. I like to use a mix of two apple varieties in this recipe to subtly vary the flavor in a delightful way.
I prefer light brown sugar because it’s less sweet than dark brown sugar and is more commonly used in baking. For the flour and butter, use whatever you have on hand; all-purpose flour will work just fine. If you want to elevate the recipe, a richer, high-quality butter can enhance the overall flavor. You don’t need ingredients like baking soda or baking powder since this is a crumble, not a cake..
